The Antimicrobial Research Unit (ARU), headed by Professor Sabiha Essack, is a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach. The ARU conducts research across human, animal, food and environmental health, investigating antibiotic resistance, its transmission and emerging threats. Through molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, genomic approaches and environmental surveillance, the Unit generates evidence to support the prevention and containment of AMR. The ARU is also committed to developing the next generation of researchers, supporting postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from across Africa
The ARU conducts multidisciplinary research across human, animal, food and environmental health, addressing antimicrobial resistance through a One Health approach. Our research spans antimicrobial surveillance, molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, genomics, environmental health and the development of innovative strategies to prevent and contain AMR.
